Scabies Home > Scabies Information
Scabies is a skin condition caused by an infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. These tiny microscopic organisms burrow under a person's skin, typically causing an itchy rash that can eventually lead to sores, scaling, redness, and small rounded lumps on the skin. Itching may be mild at first and only happen at night, but can quickly become more intense.
When considering a diagnosis of scabies, your doctor will ask for information about your symptoms and will look at where on the body the rash is present. A skin scraping can help confirm his or her suspicions. Treatment for this infection often involves medication and thoroughly washing clothes, bedding, and towels in hot water.
