Scabies Home > What Are Scabies?
Scabies is a medical term referring to an infestation with a microscopic mite (an arthropod related to the tick). Transmission occurs in locations where there is prolonged skin-to-skin contact, which is often the case in hospitals, nursing homes, and institutions.
What are some of the most common symptoms of scabies? In many cases, a person with this condition will have a rash with pimple-like bumps, sores, redness, and scaling. However, when considering a diagnosis, your healthcare provider will take into account where on the body this rash appears and may even take a skin scraping of the area and look at it under a microscope to confirm his or her suspicions.
